Why this works

Controlling the map and taking objectives becomes much easier when the enemy can't coordinate a defense. Global Silence creates these windows for Phantom Lancer to safely siege a tower or take Roshan. Once he commits with his illusions, the silence prevents enemies from using their area-of-effect spells to clear them out. A well-timed ultimate from Silencer basically guarantees that Phantom Lancer gets on top of his preferred target and stays there, often leading to a won fight and subsequent map control. Silencer's other spells also punish enemies for trying to cast anything, making it even harder to deal with the illusion swarm.

This duo comes online in the mid-game once Phantom Lancer gets a few items. The goal is to force a fight with Global Silence, allowing PL to overwhelm a key hero before their team can react with saves or crowd control. The silence window is more than enough time for him to build a threatening illusion army. In response, the opposing team is forced to play cautiously and spread out, hoping to bait out the ultimate or catch Silencer out of position before a major objective fight. They can’t afford to be grouped up when Phantom Lancer is ready to go.
