Why this works

Looking for Treant Protector to be a simple heal-bot for Phantom Lancer is missing the bigger picture. The synergy is really about control. A timely Overgrowth can lock down multiple heroes, creating a perfect killzone for Phantom Lancer and his illusions to swarm a priority target. Enemies caught by the root have no escape from the illusion army. The global Living Armor is a useful perk, helping the real Lancer survive the initial burst long enough to get his Doppelganger off and start spawning illusions, but the lockdown is what truly enables the offense.

This pairing's effectiveness really comes down to executing that specific setup. Treant Protector can enable a great start to a fight, but Phantom Lancer still has to contend with his usual problems, especially heavy magic area damage. If the enemy team anticipates the Overgrowth and has spell immunity or saves ready, the duo loses its main advantage. It's a combination that can capitalize on a good opening but doesn't fundamentally change how either hero has to play the game, leading to fights that can swing either way based on timing and cooldowns.
