Abaddon vs Bristleback

How this matchup plays

Fighting into an Abaddon often feels impossible, as he negates your team's burst damage. Bristleback sidesteps this problem entirely. His damage comes from a steady stream of Quill Spray stacks, not a single big nuke, which can overwhelm and kill a target without triggering Borrowed Time if Abaddon isn't ready. However, Abaddon has the perfect counter-tool in Aphotic Shield. A single cast removes all of Bristleback's Viscous Nasal Goo and Quill stacks from an ally, completely resetting his pressure. This fundamental trade of application and dispel means neither hero can easily establish dominance over the other.

This dynamic leads to a standoff in most engagements. Bristleback tries to build up overwhelming damage on a single hero, while Abaddon focuses on cleansing the stacks and using his ultimate to ride out the damage. Abaddon can also be a problem for Bristleback if he can land a full Curse of Avernus, but that requires facing him directly. Ultimately, the fight is decided by which hero’s team provides better backup. An isolated Bristleback gets kited and accomplishes little, while an unsupported Abaddon can be slowly drained without his ultimate ever saving him.
