Anti-Mage vs Shadow Demon

How this matchup plays

Reflecting a Demonic Purge with Counterspell often ends the fight on its own, and this interaction defines the matchup. Shadow Demon relies on his ultimate to control a key target, but Anti-Mage can turn it back on him. Disruption, Shadow Demon’s other main tool for setup or saves, is also easily dodged or blocked. Even without Counterspell, a simple Blink away from the illusions is usually enough. On top of that, Shadow Demon has a small mana pool and is extremely vulnerable to Mana Break, leaving him unable to cast spells after a few hits.

This dynamic leaves Shadow Demon with few good options at any stage of the game. He can’t effectively gank a split-pushing Anti-Mage, who will always have an escape. In teamfights, Shadow Demon is forced to either ignore the biggest threat or risk having his own spells used against him. Anti-Mage can feel free to blink onto Shadow Demon whenever he sees him, knowing that the support has no reliable way to peel for himself or lock the carry down. The result is one hero completely negating the other's game plan.
