Broodmother vs Venomancer

How this matchup plays

Picking Venomancer to counter a Broodmother can feel like the right move, but the matchup is closer than it looks on paper. Venomancer's area-of-effect poison from Plague Wards and Venomous Gale seems perfect for clearing out Spiderlings. However, the spiders have innate magic resistance, and a Broodmother with Insatiable Hunger can often lifesteal through the damage over time. She can build her army faster than Veno can clear it, especially early on. The fight becomes a race: can Veno's poison wear down the swarm before it overruns him and his towers? Often, the answer is no.

Across the map, Broodmother wants to split the map and hunt isolated heroes. Venomancer is a slow, fragile hero who makes for a very easy target when he's trying to place wards or farm a lane alone. Brood doesn't have to fight into his prepared nests of Plague Wards; she can simply go somewhere else and force him to follow. While Venomancer’s impact grows significantly in grouped-up teamfights later in the game, Broodmother excels at preventing those fights from happening. She dictates a faster tempo that he struggles to keep up with, giving her a small but consistent edge.
