Centaur Warrunner vs Phantom Lancer

How this matchup plays

Trying to swarm Centaur Warrunner with illusions often feels like a losing trade for Phantom Lancer. Each attack from a copy triggers Retaliate, causing the illusions to quickly destroy themselves on Centaur's high strength pool. A timely Double Edge can also clear out a fresh wave of them instantly. This forces the Phantom Lancer to be more careful about committing to fights. However, a farmed PL can often generate illusions faster than Centaur can clear them, and his naturally high armor from agility helps him and his copies survive the return damage long enough to become a problem.

The outcome of the game often depends on which hero hits their timings first. Centaur Warrunner is usually stronger through the mid-game, where a Stampede into Hoof Stomp can catch and kill the real Phantom Lancer before he can build a critical mass of illusions. If PL survives this window and gets his core items, the game shifts. He can use Doppelganger to dodge Centaur's initiation and his illusions become strong enough to wear down even a tanky frontliner. The game then becomes about which team can better execute a fight around these key abilities.
