Grimstroke vs Phantom Lancer

How this matchup plays

Thinking Grimstroke’s kit is useless against an illusion hero is a common trap. His Stroke of Fate clears waves of illusions easily, and a well-placed Ink Swell can reveal the real Phantom Lancer in the chaos. The problem is not about clearing the fakes, but about how they devalue Grimstroke's other spells. Phantom's Embrace will almost always latch onto an illusion, and landing a high-impact Soulbind becomes incredibly difficult. Even if you do leash the real Phantom Lancer, any follow-up single-target spell from an ally is more likely to hit a worthless illusion, wasting the copy from the ultimate.

The matchup often comes down to timing. Early on, Grimstroke has the advantage, using his high magic damage to punish a weak Phantom Lancer in lane. Once PL has items and can generate a swarm, the fights get messy. Grimstroke is forced to play a more controlling role with Ink Swell and his waveclear, often looking to Soulbind other heroes and ignore PL entirely. Phantom Lancer, on the other hand, wants to create maximum confusion with Doppelganger, forcing mistakes and overwhelming targets before Grimstroke’s team can find a clean initiation.
