How this matchup plays

Laning against a Nether Ward is a constant puzzle for Invoker. He relies on frequent spell-casting to control the lane, secure last hits, and set up ganks. Pugna's Ward directly punishes this by dealing damage for every spell used. A Quas-Wex Invoker wanting to use Tornado and EMP finds his health pool quickly drained, while even an Exort build has to be careful with its combos. However, Invoker can often destroy the Ward from a safe distance with his attack range, especially with Forge Spirits or Alacrity, making its placement and his reaction the key to the early game.

This dynamic makes the mid lane extremely volatile. The Pugna player will try to position the Ward to zone Invoker out, forcing him to choose between taking damage or missing farm. In response, Invoker looks for opportunities to destroy the Ward and then immediately go for a kill with a full combo. Pugna's Decrepify can be a crucial defensive tool against Invoker's physical damage, but it also makes him more vulnerable to magical burst. The outcome of the lane often determines which hero snowballs into the mid-game more effectively, making it a true skill matchup.
