How this matchup plays

Trying to burst a target with a full combo often feels like a mistake for Lion in this matchup. Pugna’s Nether Ward punishes high mana cost spells, and few are higher than Lion’s ultimate. Casting it near the Ward can be a death sentence. At the same time, Pugna’s own effectiveness hinges on channeling his Life Drain on a key target. Lion happens to carry two instant disables in Earth Spike and Hex, making him one of the best heroes at interrupting that channel from a safe distance.

This leaves fights between them feeling like a quick-draw duel. The entire contest revolves around who gets the jump on the other. If Lion finds Pugna out of position with a Blink Dagger, Pugna is almost certainly dead before he can react. But if Pugna can anticipate the fight and place a good defensive Nether Ward, he forces Lion to either hold his spells or risk dying to use them. The advantage goes to whichever player has better vision and positioning.
