Lion vs Venomancer

How this matchup plays

Thinking you can instantly delete Venomancer with Lion's burst is a common mistake. While a quick Hex and Finger of Death can certainly kill him, Venomancer has usually already done his job. His primary contribution, Poison Nova, is a single cast that leaves the enemy team crippled with damage over time, regardless of whether he survives another second. A Venomancer who dies after getting his ultimate off has still succeeded, leaving Lion's team in a terrible position to continue the fight. This makes Lion's single-target assassination feel much less impactful than it does against other fragile heroes.

The result is a constant cat-and-mouse game. Lion tries to find Venomancer with a Blink Dagger before he can react, aiming to prevent Poison Nova from ever being cast. A successful gank can cripple Veno's team fight. Venomancer, in turn, plays from the back lines, using Plague Wards for vision and staying out of initiation range until the perfect moment. Which hero wins the engagement often depends on who sees who first and which team has better vision control. The outcome is less about the heroes' kits and more about which player executes their plan better.
