How this matchup plays

Skewering allies to safety out of Arena of Blood defines this matchup. Mars relies on trapping key targets to win a fight, but Magnus can reposition anyone caught inside, effectively breaking the ultimate. This single interaction disrupts Mars's entire teamfight plan. Beyond that, Reverse Polarity is a reliable way to lock down a durable frontliner like Mars, who is almost always in the center of the fight. Empower also gives Magnus's own core the physical damage needed to eventually chew through Mars's high health and armor.

This dynamic forces the Mars player to hesitate all game. Before using Arena, they have to locate Magnus and try to disable him first, or bait out the Skewer. A good Magnus will position defensively, waiting to counter-initiate or save a teammate from the Arena, often turning Mars's biggest spell into a wasted cooldown. Mars can still be a threat in the laning stage and can find pickoffs if he catches Magnus out of position, but in the large-scale fights where Arena is meant to shine, Magnus has a direct answer.
