How this matchup plays

Controlling the map's tempo often feels like a stalemate in this matchup. Magnus uses Empower to accelerate his farm, letting him acquire key items and respond to pressure, while Pugna is constantly trying to chip down towers. The core interaction in fights is a standoff. A successful Blink Dagger initiation from Magnus can instantly delete Pugna before he contributes anything. However, a well-placed Nether Ward from Pugna heavily punishes the high mana cost of Reverse Polarity and Skewer, potentially turning the gank completely. Pugna's Decrepify can also save an ally caught by Magnus, negating much of the physical follow-up damage.

As the game progresses, it becomes a chess match of positioning. The Magnus team wants to play in the shadows, using vision denial to find an angle to jump on Pugna without warning. The Pugna team prefers to group up and force fights in open areas where Nether Ward can control a wide space and protect the backline. It really comes down to execution and who gets the jump. If Magnus can land his ultimate on Pugna from off-screen, his team usually wins the fight. If Pugna anticipates the initiation and gets his spells down first, his team has the advantage.
