Mars vs Spectre

How this matchup plays

Trying to lock Spectre down with Arena of Blood is usually a losing play for Mars. Even if he lands a perfect setup, Spectre can simply use Spectral Dagger to phase through the wall and walk away, leaving Mars with his biggest spell on cooldown. On top of that, Spectre's natural tankiness from Dispersion makes her very difficult for Mars to burst with his physical damage. Any attempt he makes to solo her is likely to do significant damage back to himself and anyone nearby, making him hesitate to commit his spells even when he gets a good opening.

This dynamic gets worse for Mars as the game progresses. While he might have some success bullying her in the early lane, his main job is to control teamfights in the mid-game, and Spectre completely denies his ability to do that to the enemy carry. A Mars who can't reliably trap and kill key targets struggles to create space for his own team. He’s forced to use his ultimate on other heroes, allowing Spectre to farm freely and eventually take over the game with Haunt, knowing the enemy's primary initiator can do very little to stop her.
