How this matchup plays

Fighting into a Medusa as Phoenix can feel like your biggest spell is always on the verge of being useless. Her Split Shot is a natural counter to Supernova, allowing her to attack the egg and enemy heroes at the same time without missing a beat. This pressures the Phoenix to use his ultimate defensively or from a completely isolated spot. Phoenix isn't helpless, though. Fire Spirits apply a heavy attack speed slow that directly counters Medusa’s main strength, making it much harder for her to destroy the egg. Sun Ray also helps burn through her Mana Shield over time, no matter how much mana she has.

The matchup often comes down to a duel of ultimates in teamfights. A farmed Medusa can often ignore Phoenix until he commits to Supernova, then simply turn and destroy it. If Phoenix's team dives to protect the egg, Medusa can use Stone Gaze to stop them in their tracks, letting her own team clean up. The outcome hinges on which team is better prepared for that moment. If Phoenix's team can apply breaks and control Medusa first, they can protect the egg and win the fight. If they can't, Medusa usually cleans up.
