Nyx Assassin vs Phantom Lancer

How this matchup plays

Debating a Phantom Lancer counter often brings up Nyx Assassin, but the reality is a complicated trade-off. Nyx has tools that seem good on paper, like Impale hitting multiple illusions or Spiked Carapace returning a Spirit Lance for a stun. The problem is that Nyx’s primary assassination threat, Vendetta, is completely neutered by illusions. Wasting that high-damage hit on a fake means the real Phantom Lancer is safe. Furthermore, Mana Burn is almost useless against an Agility carry with a tiny mana pool, removing another one of Nyx’s core threats and leaving him with few ways to reliably hurt the real hero.

The matchup comes down to timing and execution. An early gank from Nyx Assassin can catch Phantom Lancer before he has the items to create his army, potentially slowing his farm and creating a lead. As the game goes on, however, the advantage shifts. Once PL can reliably spawn illusions and use Doppelganger to dodge stuns, Nyx's job becomes incredibly difficult. He's forced to play reactively, hoping for a lucky stun on the real hero or a well-timed Carapace. PL, on the other hand, only needs to survive the early pressure to eventually overwhelm Nyx with sheer numbers.
