Pangolier vs Io

How this matchup plays

Picking a Pangolier into an Io often forces a change in target priority. Pangolier excels at jumping on a key hero with Swashbuckle and controlling them with Rolling Thunder, but Io’s kit is built to counter exactly that. A hero tethered to Io becomes much tankier thanks to Overcharge, frequently letting them survive Pango’s full burst. This can neutralize the kill potential of a gank or a big teamfight ultimate, turning what should have been a sure kill into a wasted commitment for the Pangolier.

As the game progresses, this defensive dynamic becomes more pronounced. The Io will typically position safely behind a core, making it very difficult for Pangolier to find a clean initiation without overextending. The Pango player is often forced to either try bursting the Io himself, which is risky, or attempt to bait out the defensive spells before committing his ultimate. While a well-played Pangolier can still find openings, Io's ability to save allies from burst with his basic spells and Relocate creates a consistent obstacle that slightly favors his team.
