Phantom Lancer vs Puck

How this matchup plays

Thinking Puck has the right area-of-effect spells to handle illusions is a common trap. In reality, Puck's spells like Waning Rift are not large or spammable enough to control the swarm, and Phantom Lancer can easily dodge the most important parts of Puck's combo. With a well-timed Doppelganger, PL can avoid the Dream Coil stun or the incoming Illusory Orb, completely turning an attempted gank around. Puck relies on landing that initial burst and control to be effective, and Phantom Lancer has the perfect tool to consistently nullify it.

This matchup gets worse for Puck as the game progresses. An early lane advantage means little once Phantom Lancer gets a Diffusal Blade. From that point on, getting hit by a single Spirit Lance can be a death sentence. The mana burn from PL’s illusions strips Puck of the resources needed for casting spells and escaping. This forces Puck into a reactive, defensive posture, unable to safely push out lanes or initiate fights. All the while, Phantom Lancer can apply constant pressure across the map, knowing he has a favorable one-on-one fight against a key enemy hero.
