Phantom Lancer vs Sand King

How this matchup plays

Clearing Phantom Lancer's illusions is the main problem, and Sand King's kit is almost perfectly designed for it. Sand Storm constantly damages the whole group, while Caustic Finale turns each dying illusion into a bomb that hurts the others. This creates a chain reaction that can wipe out the entire illusion army in seconds, often revealing the real Lancer in the process. Even a good Burrowstrike can be enough to find the right hero in the chaos and hold him down. Sand King doesn't need to guess which one is real; he can kill all of them at once.

This forces Phantom Lancer to play differently. He can’t simply run at Sand King’s team and expect to build up a critical mass of illusions. Instead, he has to play around Sand King’s cooldowns, particularly Epicenter, or try to split-push lanes where Sand King isn't present. In teamfights, Sand King’s job is to drop his spells on the Lancer clones to neutralize their threat, while Phantom Lancer has to decide whether to commit or disengage. A farmed Lancer can still overpower a support Sand King late, but SK’s tools make the journey there difficult.
