Phoenix vs Io

How this matchup plays

Trying to land a game-winning Supernova against an Io often leads to a standoff. If Phoenix commits the ultimate, Io can use Relocate to either bring a core from across the map to destroy the egg or to save a key ally from the stun. The attack speed from Overcharge also helps a tethered partner shred the egg quickly. On the other hand, Phoenix’s area damage from Fire Spirits and Icarus Dive is very effective against the two-hero ball that Io naturally creates, punishing the close positioning required by Tether.

This tension plays out across the whole game. Phoenix wants to force fights in closed spaces where the area-of-effect damage can hit both Io and their partner. Io wants to play a more reactive game, using their global presence to create uneven fights and punish a Phoenix who gets caught out of position. The outcome often depends less on the heroes themselves and more on which team has better vision and can better dictate the pace of engagements, forcing the other to react on unfavorable terms.
