Pudge vs Witch Doctor

How this matchup plays

Hooking a Witch Doctor often seems like a guaranteed kill for Pudge, but the exchange is much riskier than it appears. If Pudge can't finish the job instantly with his Dismember, he’s in trouble. A quick Maledict cast from Witch Doctor means Pudge’s own Rot will deal immense damage back to him, potentially turning the gank into a trade or even a suicide. Furthermore, a well-timed Paralyzing Cask can interrupt Pudge's ultimate, allowing an escape or for teammates to turn on him. The whole fight hinges on whether the initial burst is lethal.

This tension defines the matchup at all stages of the game. Pudge has to play from the fog, seeking a clean hook that leads to an immediate kill, because a prolonged fight favors the doctor. In teamfights, Pudge provides a great answer to Death Ward with his Dismember, but he is also a fantastic, high-health target for that same ultimate if he gets caught. Success for either hero comes down to positioning and who gets to act first, making for a very even and volatile engagement where a single misstep decides the outcome.
