Skywrath Mage vs Io

How this matchup plays

Failing to secure a pickoff often means ceding map control, and Io makes those pickoffs difficult. Skywrath Mage wants to find a target and delete them with a full spell rotation, but Io directly interferes with that plan. The healing and bonus movement speed from Tether can be enough for an ally to survive and escape the damage from Mystic Flare. If things get really bad for his partner, Io can use Relocate to pull them to safety, completely wasting Skywrath’s ultimate and leaving him out of position with no mana.

The matchup often comes down to cooldowns and initiation. A Skywrath who can find and silence Io before a fight begins can prevent the save from ever happening. This forces Io to play cautiously. On the other hand, an Io who has Relocate available allows his core to farm aggressively, knowing they have an escape hatch. This pressures the Skywrath Mage to either hold his spells for the perfect moment or risk trying to burst down Io first, which is often not the ideal use of his combo.
