Vengeful Spirit vs Witch Doctor

How this matchup plays

Stopping Death Ward with an instant stun seems straightforward, but this matchup is a genuine race. Vengeful Spirit has both Magic Missile to interrupt the channel and Nether Swap to pull Witch Doctor into a terrible spot. This makes her a natural threat to his biggest teamfight spell. Witch Doctor's counter-play is Paralyzing Cask. If he can land it on Vengeful Spirit before she gets her own stun off, his channel is safe. The fight often comes down to which hero lands their disable first; it’s a quick-draw between two supports who can both easily shut the other down.

This dynamic defines how teamfights play out. A good Vengeful Spirit will hold her position and her stun, waiting for Witch Doctor to show himself. A smart Witch Doctor will use vision, trees, or Blink Dagger to start his ultimate out of sight, hoping the Cask bounces can find Venge before she finds him. Later in the game, a successful Swap on Witch Doctor is almost always a kill, but getting caught by Maledict and a full Death Ward channel will delete Vengeful Spirit or her core just as fast. The entire fight can swing based on this one interaction.
