Mars + Zeus

Why this works

Facing down this pairing often feels less threatening than it looks on paper. The core issue is split damage types. Mars is a physical damage dealer with God's Rebuke and the soldiers from his Arena, while Zeus provides purely magical burst. This allows enemies to build balanced defenses without being punished. A single armor item softens the blow from Mars, and a Hood of Defiance or a team-wide Pipe of Insight significantly neuters Zeus's contribution, making it difficult to actually secure kills even on trapped targets.

As the game progresses, this weakness becomes more apparent. Mars will land a great initiation, trapping key heroes, but the follow-up from Zeus often fails to finish the job against opponents who have built even minimal, mixed defensive items. The enemy team can comfortably group up behind a core with defensive auras, knowing that a huge part of the magical assault is mitigated. This forces the Mars and Zeus lineup to either find completely isolated, item-less targets or lose teamfights where their combined damage gets spread too thin to be effective.
