Trying to lock down a target with Shackles often fails if Abaddon is on the other team. His Aphotic Shield instantly dispels the channel, letting the target walk free and turning the gank. This forces the Shadow Shaman player to lead with Hex instead, which can’t be dispelled by basic abilities. A quick Hex on Abaddon himself is often the best play, as it stops him from using Aphotic Shield or his ultimate to save anyone. This creates a stand-off where both heroes are trying to anticipate the other's first move, with the advantage going to whoever reacts faster.

This tense dynamic defines how fights play out all game. Shadow Shaman looks for opportunities to blink in and get an instant Hex on a key hero before Abaddon can intervene. The goal is to burst that target down in the disable duration. In response, Abaddon plays further back, positioning himself to react to these initiations and cleanse the most important debuffs on his cores. Success for either side often comes down to which hero can land their critical spell first, leading to a very balanced and execution-dependent matchup.
