Getting caught by a Shadow Shaman is a death sentence for a hero built around mobility. Anti-Mage wants to use Blink to escape, but Hex is an instant disable that provides no time for a reaction. This is often enough for a full team to collapse for a kill. Even if Anti-Mage anticipates the gank and activates Counterspell, Shadow Shaman can simply hold his ground and then use Shackles once the shield expires. The sheer duration of lockdown Shaman provides completely neutralizes Anti-Mage's ability to slip away.

This dynamic defines the game from the start. Shadow Shaman's presence makes laning incredibly dangerous for Anti-Mage, who is vulnerable to ganks that shut down his farm. As the game progresses, Anti-Mage's typical split-pushing style becomes far riskier. He's forced to play much more cautiously, knowing a single mistake could lead to him being disabled for a long time. Anti-Mage is often forced into buying defensive items earlier than he'd like, slowing down his own game plan to deal with the threat.
