How this matchup plays

Catching an Io with Berserker's Call seems like a free kill, but the reality is more complicated. Because Io is almost always tethered to a core, a successful Call on Io often forces that ally into a dangerous spot, right on top of Axe. While the tethered hero might be strong, this forced positioning can be exploited by Axe's team. The best-case scenario for Axe is catching both Io and its partner in the same Call, which completely neutralizes Io's escape and save potential for a few crucial seconds, often leading to a double kill.

This dynamic makes the mid-game a tense cat-and-mouse affair once Axe gets his Blink Dagger. He's constantly hunting for an angle where Io is briefly isolated or poorly positioned. Io's goal is to maintain distance and use Relocate to create pressure elsewhere, avoiding Axe's teamfight strength entirely. If Io and its partner get separated, even for a moment, a good Axe will punish it with a quick kill. This constant threat of instant initiation is what gives Axe a small but consistent edge, forcing the Io player to play with extreme caution.
