Getting jumped by Axe is often a death sentence for supports, and if Berserker's Call catches Witch Doctor, he dies without a fight. The opposite is equally true. A well-placed Paralyzing Cask can stop Axe’s Blink initiation cold, leaving him exposed. If Axe gets called and then cursed with Maledict, all the damage he takes from the enemy team fuels a massive damage burst when the curse ends, which can secure the kill even if he survives the initial lockdown.

This dynamic creates a tense duel of positioning throughout the game. Axe is constantly hunting for an angle to jump on Witch Doctor and eliminate him before he can use his spells. In response, Witch Doctor must play defensively from the back lines, using his cores as a buffer. He waits for Axe to reveal himself, looking for the opportunity to counter with a stun and Death Ward.
