Doom vs Witch Doctor

How this matchup plays

Using Doom's ultimate on Witch Doctor is often a losing trade, but leaving him free to cast is even worse. Witch Doctor can usually get Paralyzing Cask and Maledict out before he's the center of attention. If Doom commits his biggest spell to shutting down the support, the enemy cores are free to act. But if Doom ignores him, a full Death Ward will melt through his team, often starting with Doom himself as a large, accessible target. The threat of the Ward forces a response that plays right into Witch Doctor's hands.

This dynamic shapes the entire mid-game. Doom wants to get a Blink Dagger and isolate a key hero, but he can't safely jump into a fight where Witch Doctor is positioned. The fight becomes about who can get to the enemy backline first. The best play for Doom is to find a pickoff away from the team, but Witch Doctor's kit encourages his team to group up, protecting his cores and making it difficult for Doom to find a clean initiation. Doom often feels like he has no good targets.
