Thinking Witch Doctor can simply drop Death Ward on Drow Ranger often leads to a quick death for the Witch Doctor instead. Drow's Gust provides an instant silence and knockback, which immediately cancels the channel. This turns the matchup into a contest of initiation. Witch Doctor has to land Paralyzing Cask first to disable Drow long enough for Maledict and the Ward to do their work. If he can't get that initial stun, he's left vulnerable and out of position while Drow Ranger freely attacks him from a safe distance.

This dynamic makes positioning the key factor throughout the game. A Witch Doctor will look for opportunities to catch Drow Ranger on the edge of a fight or rotating between lanes, hoping to land his Cask before she can react.
