Earth Spirit vs Phantom Lancer

How this matchup plays

Trying to lock down a slippery target is a frustrating experience for Earth Spirit. His entire combo relies on landing sequential, single-target spells, but Phantom Lancer makes this incredibly difficult. Spells like Boulder Smash or Geomagnetic Grip are easily wasted on an illusion, which PL creates constantly. Even if you manage to find the real hero, Phantom Lancer can use Doppelganger to disjoint the incoming stun from Rolling Boulder or simply reposition out of danger. This constant misdirection can leave Earth Spirit with all his cooldowns spent and the real threat still alive.

Early in the game, Earth Spirit can still create a lot of pressure and disrupt Phantom Lancer’s farm. His high mobility and burst damage are a real problem before PL can generate a strong army of illusions. Later on, however, the matchup flips. A farmed Phantom Lancer can overwhelm Earth Spirit, forcing him to use his ultimate, Magnetize, defensively to try and identify the real hero amongst the chaos. The fight often hinges on who gets the jump and whether PL can successfully dodge the initial lockdown.
