Invoker vs Phantom Lancer

How this matchup plays

Trying to land a combo on Phantom Lancer is a nightmare for Invoker. Most of Invoker's spells are designed to control or burst a single hero, but PL splits into a dozen targets. Key spells either hit the wrong unit or get dodged entirely by a well-timed Doppelganger. Even if Invoker survives the initial jump, the mana drain from a Diffusal Blade will leave him without any spells to fight back. Phantom Lancer's entire kit seems designed to diffuse the focused power that an Invoker relies on to win fights.

This dynamic gets worse for Invoker as the game progresses. A farmed Phantom Lancer will actively hunt him, as he’s an easy target without a team to protect him. The best an Invoker can hope for is to land a perfect Tornado into EMP, but PL is mobile enough to often avoid the worst of it. The fight becomes about Invoker needing perfect setup and execution from his whole team, while the PL can create enough chaos on his own to make that impossible. The pressure he puts on breaks up the spell sequences Invoker needs to be effective.
