How this matchup plays

Trying to burst Io with a full combo often feels like a waste of a long cooldown. Lion's entire kit is built around isolating and deleting a single hero, but Io is rarely alone or without a plan. An attempt to Hex and Finger Io is often met with Overcharge, making both Io and his Tethered partner surprisingly durable. If you go on the partner instead, Io's healing and buffs can be enough to turn the fight. This interaction neuters Lion’s primary role as a pickoff-focused support, forcing him to hold his spells for a perfect moment that may never come.

The laning stage can be decent for Lion, as his multiple disables can secure kills before Io has tools to save anyone. As the game progresses, however, Io's global presence with Relocate makes it very risky for Lion to move around the map. The matchup becomes about vision control and initiation. A Lion with a Blink Dagger can potentially jump and burst Io's carry before a save is possible. But if Io anticipates the jump, or if the initial burst isn't enough, his team can instantly collapse and punish the overextension.
