How this matchup plays

Controlling the fight often comes down to which support gets their spells off first. Both heroes bring similar tools to the table: stuns, heavy burst damage, and a shared weakness to being caught out. Lion's instant Hex is a perfect answer to a channeled Death Ward, stopping it cold. On the other hand, a lucky bounce from Witch Doctor's Paralyzing Cask can easily stun Lion long enough to prevent him from reacting at all. They don't negate each other's game plans so much as they compete to execute the same one faster.

This dynamic creates a constant sense of tension from the laning stage onward. A single misstep can get either hero killed. In teamfights, Lion will look for opportunities to blink in, disable Witch Doctor, and burst him down with Finger of Death before he becomes a problem. Witch Doctor's goal is to hang back, find a good angle for Maledict, and then use his ultimate to punish a team that clumps up. The fight often hinges on which of these two squishy playmakers can find and eliminate the other first.
