Magnus vs Phantom Lancer

How this matchup plays

Cleaving through a wave of illusions feels like it should be Magnus’s strength, but it's not that simple against Phantom Lancer. While Empower helps, the real issue is Reverse Polarity. A good Phantom Lancer player can consistently use Doppelganger to dodge the stun, completely negating Magnus's biggest teamfight contribution. This forces Magnus to play a guessing game or wait for PL to use his defensive spell first. If the ultimate whiffs, Magnus and his team are left exposed and often get run over by the remaining illusions, which can quickly spiral out of control.

The matchup becomes an item and timing race. Phantom Lancer wants to get an early Diffusal Blade to start burning through Magnus's small mana pool, making it even harder to find a good Reverse Polarity. Magnus, in turn, needs to either empower a carry who can clear illusions without relying on his ultimate, or find a way to catch the real PL. This might mean buying items to survive the initial burst or coordinating with teammates for chain stuns to bait out Doppelganger. The game often comes down to a single key fight where Magnus either lands his spell or PL slips away.
