Phantom Lancer vs Pugna

How this matchup plays

Thinking Pugna's area damage is a clean answer to illusions misses the bigger picture. The problem isn't Nether Blast, it's Life Drain. Attempting to channel his ultimate on the real Phantom Lancer is a huge risk, as Doppelganger instantly breaks the tether and repositions him. This often leaves Pugna exposed while Phantom Lancer's new illusions swarm in. For a hero who relies on that single-target burst to eliminate a core, having it so easily dodged by a basic spell makes direct fights very difficult.

During the laning phase, Pugna can be a menace, pushing waves and forcing Phantom Lancer to farm defensively. The script flips once Phantom Lancer gets his core items, especially a Diffusal Blade. Pugna becomes a high-priority target who can't safely stand still to use his spells. His best play is to stay far back, using Decrepify to save himself or allies from PL's initial jump. Meanwhile, Phantom Lancer is constantly looking for that one opening to close the gap and remove Pugna from the equation before he can have an impact.
