How this matchup plays

Thinking you can Haunt on Io for an easy kill is a common mistake. Io is almost never alone, and Spectre's real problem is the hero Tethered to the wisp. The damage reduction and healing from Io's kit can negate Spectre's initial burst, buying time for the tethered ally to turn and kill her. Spectre excels at punishing isolated heroes, but Io’s entire purpose is to ensure his partner is never alone. This forces Spectre to look for rarer openings when Io is caught moving between lanes.

The game becomes a battle for positioning. The Spectre player is constantly scanning the map, waiting for a moment of separation to commit Haunt. In response, the Io player tries to bait that ultimate, staying close to an ally to turn a gank into a counter-kill. Success often comes down to which team better predicts the other's movements. If Io and his partner survive the initial onslaught they can win the fight; if Spectre finds a truly solo target, she gets the kill.
