Windranger vs Io

How this matchup plays

Trying to burst down an Io-tethered target with Focus Fire can feel like the right play, but it often fails. Io’s Overcharge provides a huge amount of damage reduction that directly counters Windranger’s physical burst, giving the tethered ally more than enough time to survive and turn the fight. A successful kill for Windranger requires catching a hero completely alone, or landing a perfect Shackleshot on both Io and his partner to prevent the save from coming through. This makes fights incredibly dependent on positioning and timing from both sides, rather than a built-in advantage for either hero.

Throughout the game, this dynamic plays out as a contest of initiation versus reaction. Windranger will often buy a Blink Dagger to find pickoffs, trying to land a Shackleshot and kill a target before Io can respond. Io’s game plan is to shadow his most valuable core, ready to use Tether and Overcharge the moment they get jumped. A well-timed Relocate from Io can also completely nullify a gank attempt, pulling his ally to safety and potentially leaving Windranger deep in enemy territory with her spells on cooldown.
